1. ME: Who Am I, Really?

Introduction

My name is Nik Muhammad Zaim, although most people know me simply as Nick. Friends, colleagues, and classmates tend to call me Nick because it is shorter, easier to pronounce, and somehow it just stuck over the years. However, if you hear someone calling me Zaim, chances are they're family. Growing up in a household where all four siblings share the name "Nik", using "Zaim" became the easiest way to avoid confusion whenever our parents called for one of us.

I am the second of four siblings and was born and raised in Batu Gajah, Perak, a small town with a rich history and plenty of character. While it may not be the first place that comes to mind when people think of Malaysia's popular destinations, Batu Gajah holds a special place in my heart. It is where I spent my childhood, built lifelong friendships, and developed an appreciation for the slower pace of small-town life.

Batu Gajah is perhaps best known for its connection to Perak's tin mining heritage and for being home to the famous Kellie's Castle, one of Malaysia's most intriguing historical landmarks. Growing up nearby meant that places like Kellie's Castle were more than just tourist attractions, they were part of the local landscape and often the backdrop to school trips, family outings, and stories passed down through generations.

Just a short drive away are places such as Gopeng and Ipoh, both of which offer their own unique charm. Gopeng is known for its natural beauty, limestone hills, caves, and outdoor adventures, while Ipoh has earned a reputation as one of Malaysia's favourite food destinations. Being surrounded by these places gave me the opportunity to experience both the tranquillity of a small town and the vibrancy of a growing city.

Like many people, my journey has taken me beyond the place where I grew up, but Batu Gajah will always be the place I proudly call home. It shaped much of who I am today and continues to be a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful stories begin in the quietest places.
